6 Life Changing lessons I have learned from the Armor of God

Bible study is very redundant and uninteresting. The Bible study leaders don’t go in depth. This Bible study, however, was different. Priscilla Shirer takes her time and explains the idea of the Armor of God from Ephesians and why it is important. Not only did I learn about the Armor of God, but I also learned about myself. I have learned that I built a cage for myself. I was the reason I wasn’t doing my best. Through this Bible study, I am able to destroy this cage and do better for myself and I want you to do the same. I want to share some lessons from Bible study that liberated me, and hopefully, you will feel the same way. Here are some questions that I had before that Bible study has answered. Maybe you have had the same questions too…

Have you ever felt like you’ll never be Righteous?

One of the most liberating lessons that I have learned from Bible study is that I am Righteous. It feels great to know that I don’t have to be perfect to be righteous. Knowing that I am righteous gives me the courage to follow God’s law. The law isn’t as overwhelming. I can focus more on the relational aspect of God’s law and do his will.

What is Sanctification?

Sanctification is a process.
Through our love for God, we choose to do what is right. Through God’s love for us, we learn what is right. Sanctification is stepping into righteousness with confidence. This process is a beautiful thing. We become closer to God and learn more about ourselves. It’s a win-win situation.

Don’t I need to be perfect to be Righteous?

You won’t get righteousness from perfection.
Perfectionism is a distraction. When we are busy trying to make ourselves perfect that we forget about God’s role in our lives. We will never reach perfection on our own and plus our vision of perfection is skewed. The point is we don’t have to be perfect. We do the will of God because we love God and God loves us.

Why must I know The Truth?

It is important to know the Truth (God’s Truth)
God’s truth reduces anxiety and also gives you confidence. Knowing who you are or why you do the things that you do is very helpful. Through God’s insight, we can be our best. God’s truth is also helpful for making decisions. It protects you from events that could’ve happened or delayed processes.

What is Faith?

Faith is “assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of thing hoped for, the conviction of things not seen“. Faith is action. Faith also means to wait. This also means don’t follow your own plan. With faith, you know God will give you an answer.

Will I ever have peace now? Do I have to wait until I go to Heaven

Peace is internal.
Peace is already inside of you, just tap into it. It is a guide. It is clarity, confidence, and stability. It doesn’t just come when you go to heaven it comes as a result of gratitude.
Reflecting or referencing what God has done for you, others or God brings peace.

I am not finished with Bible study yet but I have learned a lot. These lessons gave me a new outlook on life and Christianity. Now, I know that the only thing holding me from being the best in me. Everything that I need is already within me. I just need to tap into it.

Being A Vessel For God

I often go back to Elizabeth Gilbert’s first Ted talk where she urges the audience to change their perspective on the connotation of genius. I remember my Pastor reflected on the Ted talk and said that Elizabeth Gilbert was talking about God. In my opinion, she was talking about more than just God. Elizabeth Gilbert talked about our relationship with God. Specifically, being a vessel for God.

I use to look at being a vessel for God in a negative light. I didn’t like the terms USE and VESSEL because it sounded empty and void of life. Once I began my Bible Study, The Armor of God, and my perspective changed.

After doing my Bible study, I thought about my purpose in the world. It was a pretty random thought process (which I have pretty often). I thought about how sad it would be to be placed on this earth to do one thing… or even worse, one small thing was your purpose. I also thought about how we do not even know our purpose until it is time for us to fulfill it…then it is over. I went back to Elizabeth’s Ted Talk. There was one part in particular where she talks about the dancer dancing the one dance and possibly not dancing the same dance again. The phrase that kept popping up in my head was “IT isn’t about you”. That is when I understood it.

It really isn’t about me. The focus not being on me should be liberating. I only have to be a vessel for God. God isn’t like a business that expects me to do the same thing over and over. God IS crafting me, day by day, for his purpose. I don’t have to carry the weight of the responsibility. I don’t need to know my purpose until God is ready to reveal it to me.

I use to be jealous of my best friend because I would compare myself to her. We both have always wanted to know what God wants us to do in life. She is with a ministry and has it defined. I, on the other hand, am still dabbling in my loves, the only thing I am trying to ground myself in is Christianity. But now that I know What I know now I can focus on what is more important.

I use to be so wrapped up in trying to figure out what my purpose was that I was suicidal. I was at University and I didn’t know what to do. On top of that, I see others who have these well-thought-out plans and doing things with their lives. Now that I know I don’t have to know what my purpose is and I do not need to compare myself to others…I can put more focus on me and My relationship with God.

Today, if you struggled with something similar I encourage you to stop wondering what your purpose is. Again, it is not for you to know at this time. Instead, focus on building up a relationship with God. I highly recommend reading the Armor of God. It helped me put some things in perspective and I am sure you will enjoy it. Christianity and Self Awareness

The reason I am writing this post is to share what I have learned as a Christian  and shine light on Christianity as a whole.  While reading the Armor of God and watching Youtube videos on different religions I was inspired to share my experience with Christianity.

Being a Christian inspires internal honesty
Internal honesty comes from looking at the root of past events that affect us daily and sin. God inspires us to question ourselves on why we act the way that we do. Are we still living in the past? Why do we do something that we know has a negative outcome? In order to change, we must have those moments to look internally. Through God’s grace, we have the opportunity to learn. Through repentance, we grow. God challenges us to take off the rose-tinted glasses and deal with the truth.

Christianity promotes peace
God is a God of Love and Peace. We, as Christians, are striving towards peace. Peace is the result of Christians following the guidelines and understanding why the guidelines are in place. God’s wisdom and knowing the truth brings peace.

God doesn’t want you to have guilt or shame, that’s why Jesus died on the cross
It is hard to forgive ourselves or to ask for forgiveness after we’ve done something wrong. Jesus died on the cross so that we won’t be separated from God because of guilt. This does not mean that sinning is okay. This is an opportunity to learn and grow from our mistakes. The biggest part is forgiving ourselves for what we have done. The Bible encourages us to learn and move on, not to dwell on the past.

No More Guilt or Shame

Christianity promotes healing and moving forward in life
Hurt and pain can turn into bitterness. In my Christian experience, I had to deal with the feelings and thoughts that I carried for many years. Those thoughts and feelings dictated my life. I wasn’t in control. I had to be honest with myself and God about why I was hurting. Hurt can lead to sin and sin can lead to hurting others. Talking to God was my therapy, it allowed me to let go of the baggage. Subconsciously living in the past is self-sabotage, it kept me from being the best that I can be.

Living Authentically.
There isn’t a need to be perfect. Accept yourself and improve on what you can.

It isn’t about us (The Bigger Picture)
It is nice to know that there something beyond me, beyond this life…something greater.

Nothing is new under the sun
In the Western World, we think linear meanwhile, in other places they adopt a parallel way of thinking. Instead of using linear thinking, look at history to help make a better decision for the future. Someone else might have gone through a similar situation and we can use that experience to help formulate the next step.

Ecclesiastes 1:6

Everything is Temporary
When we see the world and life as temporary our problems become much smaller.

https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/2%20Corinthians%204%3A18

Everything is meaningless
I’ll use money as an example. We are bound to a piece of paper….not even that…a number that has no real value. Money, itself, isn’t worth anything. It is a tool.  We are tied to this tool that we revolve our lives around it. We spend money to go to college to make more money. We get up for money, we live for money and we continue to do a lot of our daily activities because of a number that does not have actual value. Money is just a tool and nothing more.
Ecclesiastes Chapter 1 NIV

There is much more to Christianity than being a model citizen or doing the right thing. It is about the mindset and the internal changes you have to do to get the right thing.

I hope that this post helped you gain some insight on Christianity. Let me know your thoughts below!

Self-Care and Love (Beyond Pampering)

via GIPHY

” title=”Self-Love” />
Everyone wants to make videos and speak on self-care but what is it and what does it look like. Self- Care is more than just bubble baths, faces masks and detox water. Although self-care can include that, it is much more.

Self Care is making sure you are groomed even when you don’t want to shower. Cleanliness will make you feel better and you may even get a jolt of energy.

Self Care is taking time to reflect on what you did each day.  We don’t think about what we did during the day, what was accomplished or how we felt throughout the day. We don’t question why we’ve felt what we felt. I was guilty of journaling and not being conscious while I write. After I would journal, I still felt the same way I did before I journaled, but now that I reflect I feel much calmer. I also gain clarity and insight.

Self-Care is doing what is best for you. Sometimes, doing what is best for you is something that you may not want to do. You may have to read when you don’t want or to or break up with someone that you love.

Self-Care is knowing who you are. You have to realize that you are a better person than you think you are. Depression can make you feel like you aren’t resilient or a horrible person but that isn’t true. Don’t degrade yourself just forgive yourself and work on your issues. It is something that is hard and we tend to condemn ourselves but there isn’t any reason why you need to put yourself in hell. Let God be the judge and stop judging.

Self-Care is celebrating. Sometimes we don’t realize that we got a lot done in one day.  It is okay to pat yourself on the back because you deserve it.

Self-Care is not pressuring yourself. Be kind to you. Love yourself and be patient.  You are not supposed to be another person or a copy.

Self- Care is healing. Free yourself and live authenticly.

How To Stop Being a Perfectionist ( and 5 Reasons why you should stop)

I am a perfectionist. It is hard for me to finish projects because they can always be better. Being a perfectionist also contributes to my inconsistency and procrastination. I put so much pressure on myself to do something great or just be the best. An example that I struggle with is reading the Bible and praying. I don’t stay consistent because I always pressure myself to read every day or I condemn myself a bad Christian. It does feel good the days when I do read the bible and I pray. It feels like a weight off of my shoulder but the hard part is reaching my own expectations for me.  I am always trying to be this perfect version of myself at the expense of myself. I’ve noticed that being a perfectionist has inhibited me to have peace within my mind and with myself. I don’t feel free. I am critical of everything and I hold myself back. I wait to have all of my ducks in a row until I can do something that I want to do.  So what is the point of being a perfectionist?

It isn’t healthy and there aren’t results. It affects hobbies and things that I would want to progress in. There isn’t a need for it anymore. If you are anything like me you may have these symptoms as well from being a perfectionist.

Here are some reasons why perfectionism isn’t healthy:

  1. Not Authentic (meaning no peace)
  2. Inconsistent because you put too much pressure on yourself
  3. Procrastination/Never completing tasks
  4. You hold yourself back because you wait for all your ducks to be in a row
  5. You’ll never be at your best

Again, there isn’t any worth to keep picking at yourself and plus it is not your place to judge anyone including yourself.

So…..

-Stop condemning yourself

-Learn to let go of the control and give it to a higher power

-Accept yourself and know that it will all work in your favor

Once we take these steps and learn how to be free life will be so much better. 🙂

How You should read the bible

As you all know I am inconsistent with reading the Bible among many other things.  I try so hard to do the right thing and be consistent. I often times found myself not “delighted” in the Lord.  I would try and read the Bible as fast as I could or read as little as possible until I found this article.   The title of the article is Do You Read enough Bible and it is a great question.  In the article, the writer discusses his own battles with reading the bible and how we have all went about it the wrong way.  We should be excited about reading the bible because it is the book of Eternal Life and it liberates us.  The Bible truly is the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.  We should be eager to meditate on the word and memorize it because it is for our benefit.  It is the key component that we need to get through today and the rest of the days of our lives.  So I encourage that you too will go and read the article and also sign up for the e-mail subscription.
